To be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, a person typically has three or more of the following risk factors:

Abdominal obesity – excess fat around the waist (measured as waist circumference).
High blood pressure – ≥130/85 mmHg or on treatment for hypertension.
High blood sugar – fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dL or on treatment for elevated blood sugar.
High triglycerides – ≥150 mg/dL or on treatment for elevated triglycerides.
Low HDL cholesterol – <40 mg/dL in men or <50 mg/dL in women.
